As I stood watching Fireworks in my favorite city on the Fourth of July I had a jolt of memory as a child…
Laying on the hood of my dads car parked right undre the fireworks with ear plugs in watching the pretty colors take over the sky. Its amazing how something so simple as seeing a firework can bring back a cherished memory you’d almost forgotten.
Childhood is such a simple time and I think as we get older we start to forget those simple days. The days of watching fireworks, playing in the sprinklers, running around outside until way after dark, catching fireflies in a jar etc. That pretty much sums up my childhood even though I grew up in the big city of Dallas, TX.
I was in Chicago over the July 4th weekend and even though I was exhausted for the 9:45 start time of the firework show I sat there and watched with my mouth gaped open with that childhood simplicity and loved every second of it. I forgot that I was tired. I forgot I had woken up at 2:30 AM to make a flight that day. I had forgotten about the trouble checking into the hotel, etc. When you are a child you dont worry. You don’t have to deal with things like early flight stress, you just sit back and enjoy the fireworks.
We should all be grateful for the simple things in life. Next time you are outside and see a firefly remember that.
